Used Honda Pilot Details in Butler, PA

The Honda Pilot is Honda’s mid size crossover that can seat up to eight adults with space and comfort. Now on the fourth generation, which debuted in late 2022, it's an excellent vehicle to consider for a family. While the fourth generation is very new, plenty of used third-generation examples are around.

The third-generation Pilot debuted in 2015 and received a facelift in 2019. Since then, it underwent incremental changes for every model year right up to 2022. It can seat up to eight occupants across three rows in a 152-cubic-foot cabin, carrying 16 cubic feet of luggage space. Many users choose to fold the third row and get an additional 50 cubic feet of space.

Inside, there’s tri-zone climate control with rear air vents, a whopping sixteen cupholders, and an 8-inch touchscreen on higher trims. This supports Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, as well as voice commands. Meanwhile, a 3.5-liter V6 does duty under the hood, generating an ample 280 horsepower and sending it to the wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission. Selecting the TrailSport trim level grants you some off-road abilities too. All-wheel-drive third-generation Pilots can tow up to 5,000 pounds, while front-wheel-drive variants can still manage 3,500 pounds.

Safety is assured with an ample complement of airbags, stability control, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and child safety locks. There's also an incredible array of options, including blind-spot monitoring and a tri-angle backup camera.

A Brief History of the Honda Pilot

When it debuted in 2002, the first-generation Honda Pilot was the largest SUV produced by the Japanese manufacturer. It was built in Alabama and Ontario, aimed squarely at the North American market. The first generation offered seating for up to eight passengers in a stadium seating configuration, but the third row was best suited for kids. Sporting all-wheel disc brakes with ABS and a 3.5-liter V6 with drive-by-wire throttle, the 255-horsepower first-generation Pilot featured Honda's VTM-4 four-wheel-drive system. By 2006, a front-wheel-drive variant was also offered for users who wanted better fuel economy and didn’t need the rear wheels to be driven as well. A 5-speed automatic transmission was standard, while many competitors still had a 4-speed unit.

The second generation debuted in 2008 and was slightly larger on the inside and outside. It would see Honda's satellite-linked navigation system on the inside, as well as the addition of a 120-volt power port. It received a significant facelift in 2012 and gained features such as an 8-inch dashboard screen, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and tri-zone climate control. In 2015, the SE (Special Edition) was introduced, with a standard rear entertainment system, plus satellite radio and a powered moonroof. The engine remained a 3.5-liter unit with 250 horsepower, driving the wheels via a 5-speed automatic gearbox.

The third generation was introduced in 2015 and built at Honda's Lincoln, Alabama plant. It saw a significant redesign and a 10% reduction in drag area for better efficiency. Buyers could now spec second-row captain’s chairs, reducing seating capacity to seven in this configuration. A host of safety features were introduced as well, including blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and more. The 3.5-liter V6 now receives direct injection and a start-stop system on higher trims and generates 280 horsepower.

The fourth generation entered the market in late 2022 for the 2023 model year and once again saw a complete redesign. It continues to use a 3.5-liter V6, now with 285 horsepower, driving the wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox. The TrailSport trim receives even more enhancements for better off-roading, including a 1-inch lift, skid plates, and special tuning for the all-wheel-drive system.
